WHAT IS “ACE" BOOK ABOUT?
It is an illustrated encyclopaedic storybook written in two different languages – in English, which is a language most children can understand, and in Lithuanian, which will help children born abroad to get to know the alphabet and the words of this language.
Lithuanian language isn’t the mother tongue to many children living abroad, and some do not speak the language at all. This makes it difficult to find an approachable way to learn and read about their roots.
The story is about a little acorn called Ace and his journey to find his homeland where he can let his roots into the soil. Ace was tragically kidnapped from his home one night and was lost in the most remote part of Lithuania. Unplanned and against his will, the little acorn finds himself far from home and has to overcome a multitude of challenges in order to reach his destination.
During the journey, the acorn makes new forest friends. Tawny the barn owl, Timothy the circus-cast bear and Finn the aquatic warbler help Ace find the long, difficult way home. Not only his new forest friends, but also the people he meets – zoologist Tadas Ivanauskas, scientist Jonas Basanavičius and pilot Steponas Darius – help him. These characters lead the acorns towards home through various parts of Lithuania. The acorn keeps a record of his journey in a small, battered notebook, which he has kept with him since he was kidnapped.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I am a children's book illustrator, working in a variety of media, but I mostly like to work with colored pencils. I have a Master's degree in Fine Art and Illustration and have had the honour of illustrating two published books.
I'm originally from the UK, but from 13 years old I have been living in Lithuania - this move has inspired me to create illustrations and stories to inspire the children of other emigrants. Through my work I hope to bring joy and comfort to young readers who are on their own life journey.
